Hi Sewing Friends! I had the pleasure of sewing with Mister Domestic’s new line called Playroom by Art Gallery Fabrics! This fabric is so so fun!!!! If you have not seen it yet check it out here and make sure to go look at the beautiful Playroom Lookbook for more inspiration!
The Playroom fabric line just shouts happy! 🙂 I found it so playful! It reminds me of fun times with my little kids but also nostalgia for when I was a kid!
I sewed up some of Sharon Holland’s wonderful Handy Baskets which is a free tutorial on her blog. Find these here. They are super quick to sew up and they use cork for the inside which acts as the stabilizer too! I love how they look! They make perfect baskets to hold supplies when my kids are crafting. 🙂
Since my children love to get creative with painting, drawing, just about anything, I thought I would make a sweet little mug rug for them so they have somewhere to put there hot chocolate during these winter months. This mug rug is for 3 cups but you can make yours as small or large as you want depending on the number of kids. This is a simple pattern that can be made in an afternoon.
Playroom Mug Rug Supplies
For the center blocks
3- 4×4 inch fussy cut square for the center
2-2 1/2 x 4 inch rectangle solid fabric for between the fussy cut squares
For the outer border
4- 2 1/2 fussy cut squares
2-2 1/2 x 4 inch rectangles
2- 2 1/2 x 14 3/4 inch rectangles
For the batting and backing
8 x 18 3/4 inch piece of Fusible fleece
8 x 18 3/4 inch piece of backing fabric
Ok lets get started!
First sew your fussy cut blocks and solid fabric rectangles together.
Next take your 2 1/2 inch squares and sew them to the 2 1/2x 14 3/4 inch border rectangles.
Finally sew the 2 1/2x 4 inch border pieces to the sides of the fussy cut center and then sew the top and bottom on. Your mug rug top should look like this.
Next take your fusible fleece and iron it to the backing fabric.
Finally put right sides together. Using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew around the entire mug rug leaving a 4 inch opening on one of the shorter sides for turning right side out.
Turn right sides out. Iron the the fabric part you left open for turning, in 1/4 inch and then top stitch 1/4 inch around the top of the mug rug. I also added an 1/8 inch top stitch as well. Then I just stitched in the ditch but you could quilt it however you like! I had some sweet little heart buttons so I decided to add those to give it an even sweeter vibe.
And there you have it! A cheery little playroom mug rug for a chilly winter day!! 🙂 I hope you enjoyed this tutorial! Happy Sewing Friends!!!
